The specifics of each health insurance plan vary, but the rule of thumb is that PPOs are a little more expensive and have a higher deductible than HMOs, PPOs are also better at covering out-of-network costs.

If you travel a lot, PPOs are often the best option since they have better out-of-network coverage. An HMO plan will often only cover in-network expenses which means you may have to cover costs in other states.
